Teaching

As a teacher, my focus is on helping students use their knowledge about media and communication to engage with the people, communities and systems that surround them. In other words, I do my best to make the theoretical insights that come out of communication research both understandable and relevant to their goals as future practitioners and citizens. As an instructor I strive to implement interactive and inclusive teaching practices that provide opportunities for all students to engage with the core concepts of communication. Not only do I enjoy this immense challenge, but find that it forces me to focus on why and for whom the work I do as a researcher matters.

Here are a few of the courses I teach at UC Santa Barbara:

COMM 89 – Theories of Communication
COMM 128 – Intergroup Communication
COMM 188 – News, Politics, & Democracy
COMM 213 – Media, the Individual & Society (graduate course)
